2010 – The Year for 20:20 vision

31st March 2010 – Burson-Marsteller UK (B-M) has been appointed by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeon (ESCRS) to deliver a European public awareness campaign in 2010, highlighting the benefits and safety record of LASIK laser eye surgery.

The campaign will mark the 20th anniversary of the first LASIK surgery in 1990 by the Greek ophthalmic surgeon Ioannis Pallikaris and will highlight that LASIK is a safe and effective form of vision correction when carried out by a qualified and experienced laser eye surgeon.

“This is the first time ESCRS has embarked on an awareness campaign with the general public,” commented ESCRS president Josep Guell, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Autonoma University of Barcelona, Spain. “We are implementing this campaign to ensure that people considering laser vision correction have access to accurate, up-to-date information. We appointed B-M to work with us because they demonstrated a good understanding of the laser eye surgery market and recommended a cost-effective campaign to meet our objectives.”

The campaign will target 25-40 year olds throughout Europe via a campaign using both digital and traditional media.

Currently 3.5 million LASIK surgeries are performed every year in Europe and it is the most common form of laser eye surgery for correcting both long or short sight and astigmatism.

About LASIK
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. LASIK is performed by an ophthalmologist utilising a microkeratome and an excimer laser or, with all- laser LASIK, a femtosecond laser to create the flap and an excimer laser.
